The Drift - C.J. Tudor Audiobook
Shared by:XavierOnline
Three ordinary people risk everything for a chance at redemption in this audacious, utterly gripping novel of catastrophe and survival at the end of the world, from the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man
Hannah awakens to carnage, all mangled metal and shattered glass. During a hasty escape from a secluded boarding school, her coach careened over a hillside road during one of the year’s heaviest snowstorms, trapping her inside with a handful of survivors, a brewing virus, and no way to call for help. If she and the remaining few want to make it out alive, with their sanity–and secrets–intact, they’ll need to work together or they’ll be buried alive with the rest of the dead.
A former detective, Meg awakens to a gentle rocking. She is in a cable car suspended far above a snowstorm and surrounded by strangers in the same uniform as her, with no memory of how they got there. They are heading to a mysterious place known to them only as “The Retreat,” but when they discover a dead man among their ranks and Meg spies a familiar face, she realizes that there is something far more insidious going on.
Carter is gazing out the window of the abandoned ski chalet that he and his ragtag compatriots call home. Together, they manage a precarious survival, manufacturing vaccines against a deadly virus in exchange for life’s essentials. But as their generator begins to waver, the threat of something lurking in the chalet’s depths looms larger, and their fragile bonds will be tested when the power finally fails–for good.
The imminent dangers faced by Hannah, Meg, and Carter are each one part of the puzzle. Lurking in their shadows is an even greater threat–one that threatens to consume all of humanity.

33 - Must be
Meg
‘Gone?’ Sarah stared at her. ‘I don’t understand.’
Meg paced the car. ‘He lied. The son of a bitch lied and went ahead of me.’
Sarah blinked. ‘But isn’t that brave of him? Now you don’t have to risk your life.’
No, Meg thought. Sarah didn’t understand. Because of the girl. The girl with the dark hair. She stopped and fumbled in her pocket. She pulled out the crinkled photograph. The one she had found on Paul.Daniel and Peggy. Invicta Academy.
Meg squinted harder at the picture. This time focussing on the young man. She tried to add years, lose the weight, the long hair. The eyes, she thought. The startling blue eyes.
It was him. Sean. Sean was Daniel. Daniel was Sean.
Paul had his photo. So, he must have known who Sean really was. Or at least known he would be on this cable car. He was looking for him. But why? Sean had said he wanted revenge for the death of someone he loved. A girl. Was this her? Was that why he was here? Was the person he believed responsible at the Retreat?
‘When I find them, I’m going to make them pay.’
If Sean had realized that Paul was looking for him, that was a good motive for murder. Kill Paul and let Karl take the blame. And what about Max? Had Max spotted something, or had he just been a liability – dead weight?Sean hadn’t taken her place because he cared about her risking her life.
He had done it because he was on a mission. Revenge.
And a man who could murder, lie and deceive in order to achieve his goal … was that the sort of man who would send rescue?
Sarah was still staring at her. ‘What is it? What’s wrong?’
‘I have to stop him,’ Meg said.
‘What are you talking about? If Sean has made it across, we just have to wait for him to send help. It will all be okay.’
Meg shook her head. ‘You don’t get it.’
She could see the hope in Sarah’s eyes. Hope and desperation. She was clinging to that fragile thread and Meg was about to snatch it away.
‘I don’t think Sean is going to send help.’
‘What? Why?’
‘He killed Paul.’
‘Paul. Who’s Paul?’
‘The security guard. Paul was his real name, and he was a cop.’
‘How … how do you know that?’
‘I knew him. I recognized him.’
‘And you didn’t say?’
‘I wasn’t sure it was relevant.’
Sarah regarded her suspiciously. ‘And you thought we might suspect you?’
Meg sighed. ‘Listen. I think Paul was here because of Sean. I found this picture in his pocket.’
She held out the photograph. Sarah hesitated, then took it. She frowned. ‘Who are these people?’
Meg pointed to the girl. ‘Did you see the tattoo on Sean’s chest?’‘Sort of.’
‘It’s this girl.’
‘You can’t be sure.’
‘Look at the young man in the picture, Sarah. Really look. Doesn’t he seem familiar to you?’
Sarah stared at the picture. Then she shook her head and handed the photograph back. ‘It could be anyone.’
‘It’s him,’ Meg said. ‘You know it is.’
‘No.’
Meg resisted the urge to shake the other woman’s shoulders. ‘Sarah, Sean is a killer. He is not sending help back for us. Why would he?’
‘He can’t just leave us here. I mean, someone would find out.’
But would they? Meg stared back out of the glass. What was the benefit to Sean of sending help, of increasing the chance of being discovered? Why not just make his escape? Save his own skin?
Meg felt the frustration build. She wanted to hit or kick something. But she probably couldn’t afford to waste the energy right now.
And then she realized something else. She patted her pockets. Empty.
Sean had taken the gun.
She came to a decision.
‘I’m going after him.’
