The Gremlins novelization (published in 1984 by George Gipe) is a cult-classic tie-in that features a much darker tone and expands heavily on the movie’s lore.

It features a bizarre opening that frames Mogwai as genetically engineered aliens, includes several cut subplots, and gives very different fates to the town’s characters.

Novel-Exclusive LoreUnlike the movie, which leaves Mogwai origins vague, the book begins with an extended prologue about an alien planet.

A scientist named Mog Turman created the gentle “Mwai” species. However, their physiology was highly unstable, meaning only one in 10,000 would retain their sweet demeanor; the rest would mutate into the violent, chaotic creatures we know as gremlins.
