Is there such a thing as a second chance in life? And if there is, what price would anyone pay to take that second chance? David and Amy Carson will be given that elusive second chance but it will require them to plumb the very depths of their souls and their beliefs. As they and their eight-year-old daughter, Daisy are preparing for a dream holiday in America, they have no idea of the maelstrom of evil and madness they are entering.
They’ve heard nothing of the series of child abductions and murders that have plagued the area they intend to visit.
They know nothing of the crazed cult that has spread terror throughout the state they are all looking forward to seeing.
Nothing can prepare them for the violence, terror and depravity they are to face. As they travel along the highways of Colorado they are pursued not just by the forces of an unimaginable evil but also by the darkness within themselves.
When the final confrontation comes, they will discover things about themselves they never wanted to know and never dared to imagine….

I love horror, suspense, and mystery novels. This one blends those genres with a touch of splatterpunk. (There are scenes of brutal violence against young children. But it doesn’t feel pornographic or self-indulgent as it does in splatterpunk. The sex scene in this book, however, does feel pornographic, but that’s okay). The writing isn’t bad, but the plotting, the storyline, is REALLY REALLY BAD. It is one of the worst novels I have read or heard because there are so many inconsistent and contradictory things in the novel.
For example: the protagonists are informed by a trucker that There are radio and news reports telling listeners to be on the lookout for a little girl who has been kidnapped (in this very rural sparsely populated area of the US). And it just so happens that this couple have the girl (for good reason) in the back of their RV. A couple scenes later in the book, the couple go into a truck stop restaurant and have a leisurely meal with the little girl. Apparently the author and the couple forgot about the news reports. But the couple do know that they are on the run. But they make the conscious decision to go inside and eat before refueling their RV, which is nearly on empty in a desolate part of the country. And again, they’re eating in public with the little girl who is kidnapped, a little girl who is practically mute.
Predictably, because they chose to eat before getting gas, they end up having to make a fast escape in the RV so they cannot refuel. Then as cars are trying to run them off the road or stop them, our protagonists are frantically wondering out loud why these people are after them and whether they are insane, etc! They seem to have forgotten that this little girl is wanted and they have been walking around in public with her!
In another scene, after the RV gets shot at, our protagonists say that they must get it repaired before continuing on — even though the worst damage is a broken window in the rear door of the RV. And they are aware that more people will be coming after them for the little girl. Oh, and do they hide the little girl in the RV while it is getting these unnecessary repairs?? No, of course not, they take her out of the RV and parade her around in front of the suspicious employees, who comment openly on how little resemblance there is between this little girl and the husband and wife posing to be her parents. The husband affirms this but says that it is common that children don’t look like their parents. (Later in the book, btw, the husband observes that this little girl is the spitting image of their actual daughter. Wtf?)
Oh, and at the repair shop, when nobody is looking, the little girl kills a the families watch dog with her bare hands and reportedly eats part of it. We don’t know if she actually part of the dog but she does return to the RV with blood all under under her fingernails. The the wife says that the little girl must have gotten cut and rinses off the hands and then offers a Band-Aid even though there is no apparent injury at all! Perhaps the author is trying to say that the wife is losing it. But if so, The author fails. And the wife doesn’t become delusional or anything. She is portrayed as perfectly lucid)
The little girl is also shown to be vicious in another scene, and other people from the region are shown to be scared of the little girl, yet this is never explained throughout the entire book. The bit about the girl killing the dog with her bare hands is never explained. I know, you might think I’m spoiling it. But what I’m really doing is letting you know I can’t spoil it because there’s no reveal.
The motives of the people who want this child are never explained either
In the end the author decides to provide a twist but that twist removes the motivation for the repeated chase scenes in which people try to get this little girl back from the husband and wife couple.
The twist ending also turns into nonsense the scene where the little girl is first taken by the couple, and it especially renders nonsensical a police officer’s response after discovering that the girl is gone.
I could go on and on and on pointing out the inconsistencies and contradictions and dropped plot points, But you get the picture. If some of you are irritated thinking I’ve spoiled the book for you, I have refrained from revealing many things. But hopefully I have actually now prevented you from wasting your time and energy listening to it. There are better books out there than this. If you like a mysterious horror -ish novel, I highly recommend The Night Market instead of Chase. It’s available on this site. And it got a starred review from publishers weekly, something that would be inconceivable for Chase.
